Meet Our Governors

Chair: Mrs Liz Smith - Co-opted

I am Liz Smith and I joined the Governing Body as a parent Governor in July 2014. I have two children who both attended Charlotte School and experienced what this great school has to offer.

My motivation for becoming a school Governor was to give something back to both the school and the community. I also wanted my voice to be heard when it comes to shaping the future for our children.

I am now the Chair of Governors. If you would like to talk to me about any aspect of school life here at Charlotte, please contact me through the school Office, I look forward to talking to you.

Vice Chair: Dr Fiona Kilpatrick - Co-opted

I am proud to have served Charlotte Nursery and Infant School as a Local Authority governor for the past four years and more recently as a Co-opted governor from 2019.

I am grateful for the opportunities I was given as a child to foster a lifelong love of learning and this is why I strongly believe in our Charlotte School motto to give 'every child, every chance, every day' to achieve their best. My own experiences have shaped my attitude towards education and I believe that children flourish when they have access to high quality holistic education that is personal and responsive to their needs. This is why I want to ensure we work together to encourage and support our children to grow their resilience and confidence in order for them to excel and enjoy their learning journey. I would like to see all of our children afforded the chance to access excellent educational facilities on their doorstep and to ensure all our children have an opportunity to learn and grow as individuals. I feel the role of school governor provides an opportunity for me to work in parternship with our children, our parents and carers, our teachers and our school governors to shape the future for our children.

Councellor James Dawson - Local Authority

I’m James Dawson I’m 34 years old and have lived in Ilkeston all my adult life. Growing up just down the road in Stapleford, I’ve come full circle ending up where my Grandparents were born.  I have been the Councillor for Awsworth Road Ward of Erewash Borough Council (in which the school sits) since 2015.  I am currently the Local Government Association Drowning Prevention Lead nationally and work with other partners including schools to try and reduce the number of preventable drowning deaths both locally and nationally.  I am also a Governor on Granby, Chaucer and Kensington Junior Schools.  Outside of school my real love is Military & Maritime History! I’m a founder member of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, as well as a Governor Member of the RNLI, I also enjoy sailing and model making.

Mrs Karen Ennis - Parent

My name is Karen Ennis and I have lived in Ilkeston all my life. I have been a Parent Governor at Charlotte Infant and Nursery school since January 2019, my daughter attends the school and I wanted to be more involved in her's and the other children's education and wellbeing . I volunteer my time every Monday, helping with reading and other classroom duties and feel this gives me a greater insight into the school and I take delight in seeing how the children are growing, developing and enjoy watching the journey they are all taking.

I work in a financial organisation in which my roles have included management, underwriting and have GDPR experience.

I previously worked on a volunteer basis for over 10 years at Ilkeston Hospital Radio so have always tried to play a part in the community.

Miss Sarah Henshaw - Staff

I have been a dedicated member of staff at Charlotte for 3 years.  I am the Early Years Leader and teach Panda class in Reception.  I have been a teacher for 18 years now and have many years’ experience as a staff and parent governor.  I am a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee. Charlotte is a great place to work and a great place to learn.  The governors have worked successfully alongside staff and parents to provide challenging, enjoyable and worthwhile learning experiences for all children.  I enjoy and thrive on the challenge that comes with every aspect of school life and am passionate about high quality education and each and every child reaching their full potential. Nothing but the best is good enough.
