INTENT:
At Charlotte Nursery and Infant school English is at the heart of our broad and enriched curriculum. Teaching and learning takes place through focused lessons as well as being embedded throughout other areas of learning and continuous provision. Our key aim is for children to become independent and confident readers who love reading, by the end of Year 2. This will enable children to unlock all areas of the curriculum and have the knowledge and skills to be lifelong learners as they move forward in their school journey.
To achieve this when children start in the early years, whether that is Nursery or Reception, they experience a language and vocabulary rich curriculum. This along with high quality phonics teaching, using the Song of Sounds scheme, the children develop the building block for reading. As the children move into KS1 high quality teaching of phonics continues along side other teaching strategies.
At Charlotte we ensure children experience a wide range of high quality texts to embed a love of reading, comprehenson skills and inspiration for writing.
