Mathematics
Early Years (Nursery and Reception)
The pupils at Charlotte Nursery and Infant School are offered a broad and balanced Mathematics curriculum that has full coverage of the Early Years Curriculum. The scheme that is used in the Early Years is White Rose Maths; which is adapted to meet the needs of our learners. We have chosen this scheme because it links progressively into the Power Maths scheme used in KS1 and suits the needs of our learners.
Our curriculum in mathematics provides the opportunity to learn key skills and concepts whilst also supporting our pupils to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills in real life contexts – making maths real and meaningful to them. This is achieved in a variety of ways such as every day routines, counting at register time, using language such as first and then, and simple problem solving situations such as 'are there enough' ‘which book shall we vote for to read?’
Charlotte Nursery and Infant School recognises that mathematics is both a key skill within school, and a life skill to be utilised through everyday experiences. A high-quality maths education provides a firm foundation for understanding how maths is used in everyday life and activities, developing pupils’ ability to reason mathematically. We will do this by developing a strong grounding in number, as this is essential so that all children develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically. Children should be able to count confidently, develop a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers. By providing frequent and varied opportunities to build and apply this understanding, children will develop a secure base of knowledge and vocabulary from which mastery of mathematics is built. In addition, it is important that the curriculum includes rich opportunities for children to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics including shape, space and measures. It is important that children develop positive attitudes and interests in mathematics, look for patterns and relationships, spot connections, ‘have a go’, talk to adults and peers about what they notice and not be afraid to make mistakes. Statutory framework for the early year’s foundation stage March 2021
At Charlotte Nursery and Infant School, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- develop a strong sense of number in order to develop the necessary building blocks to excel mathematically.
- develop a secure base knowledge and vocabulary from which mastery of mathematics is built.
- develop positive (have a go) attitudes and interests in mathematics.
Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2)
The pupils at Charlotte Nursery and Infant School are offered a broad and balanced Mathematics curriculum that has full coverage of the National Curriculum. The scheme that is used in Key Stage 1 is Power Maths but this has been adapted to meet the needs of our learners. Our curriculum in mathematics provides the opportunity to learn key skills and concepts whist also supporting our pupils to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills in real life contexts – making maths real and meaningful to them.

- A process of enquiry and experiment.
- An ability to solve problems and think logically in order to work systematically and accurately.
- An ability to work both independently and in cooperation with others.
- Competence and confidence in pupils’ maths knowledge, concepts and skills.
