At Charlotte Nursery and Infant School we use a PSHE scheme called Jigsaw, all the way from Nursery up to Year 2. This combines PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development.
Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with puzzle pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time, allowing for whole school themes. Lessons are delivered in an age and stage-appropriate way so that they meet the children’s needs.
The different puzzles over the year are:
Jigsaw lessons enable children to learn skills to help them self-regulate, share their voice, know how to express their emotions and ask for help. Through all the activities and discussions staff can support children and identify children who may need extra support and help.
Above all the most import part of the schme and what underpins all we do at Charlotte is the quality relationships between the adults and children, children and children, and adults and adults across the school community.
Each lesson encourages a circle time, in age appropriate ways and it is an essential part of building confidence and trust in self and others. The Jigsaw friends, a key part of Jigsaw, offer a comforting hug during these activities.
